ROSE

Rose slept against the car window, her chin resting on the gray poncho bunched in her hands. Slowly, her eyes began to flutter open upon feeling a firm hand nudging her shoulder. A moan of protest escaped her soft lips, feeling like she had just fallen asleep.

“Rose.”

Startled to hear Kane’s voice, she fully opened her eyes, sitting up, trying to process where she was and how she got here.

“You’ve been asleep for a couple of hours.”

Hearing his voice again had everything flooding back to her. The masked gala, her going back to Kane’s place and hardly sleeping, the kiss—that incredible kiss—and then Kane’s hands on her body, to now the road trip. It seemed like all of this should have taken a week instead of less than twenty-four hours.

“Where are we?” she asked, coming out of her haze.

“El Paso. I’m hungry.”

Looking around them she could see the triangular shaped Franklin mountain range. Doing the geography in her head, she concluded they must be north of Interstate 10. They were near the home of the University of Texas in El Paso.

Taking her eyes off the view, she took in her immediate surroundings. They sat in an empty parking lot of Rudy’s.

“Hope you’re up for some barbecue!” He smiled as he got out of the truck and twisted into a stretch, his T-shirt stretching across his broad shoulders as he lifted his hands behind his head, leaving the view of his lower ab muscles for Rose to stare at.

Continuing to stare at his chiseled body, her mouth began to water and her body turned tense. She wanted nothing more than to jump him.

He looked down at her, letting a husky chuckle fill the silence, her eyes snapped up to see a sexy smirk on his face. Knowing he had just caught her checking him out, her face flushed with embarrassment as she attempted to banish thoughts of what his body could to do hers.

Feeling her muscles tighten from being in one position, she stretched out her long legs in her seat. Even her jeans felt stiff from the ride.

Walking around the front of the vehicle, Kane kept his gaze trained on her, his sexy smirk in place even as he opened her door. She couldn’t help but feel annoyed that he read her so well and seemed to enjoy making her blush.

“Thanks.” She stepped out of his truck. “So, what’s the plan?” she asked, trying desperately to focus her thoughts on anything but how he could make her feel.

“Late lunch, gas, and you stealing a chocolate bar.” He winked at her, closing the door.

His all-business attitude did the trick, snapping her out of her lust-filled thoughts. “Funny.” She rolled her eyes dramatically.

“Oh, I’m serious,” he said, an edge of irritation in his tone. “We’ll talk about it once our stomachs are full. Everything looks brighter when one’s not starving.” Dismissing any further discussion on the topic, he began walking toward the restaurant, mulling over his plan.

She followed behind him into the restaurant.
